Channel 3

previously on DarwinTunes

Description

Tempo:125bpm
Time signature:4/4
Population size:100

This channel does not use any samples (e.g. drum, instrument or vocal sounds). The only sounds you here come from Evolectronica's built-in evolvable synths. A channel similar to this will soon be used in a major scientific experiment.

Evolutionary history

Listen to some tracks made with loops sampled at random intervals while this channel was evolving...

I must confess confusion...

I thought "DarwinTunes" was new. I've been over there participating, under the presumption I was involved in something that had just debuted.

Yet this channel says "previously on DarwinTunes," and includes an evolutionary history that goes back to September.

What's the deal?

sorry for the confusion

The evolutionary history is wrong! Actually it's several evolutionary histories concatenated.

What is playing/evolving on this channel is a population we were using to test the new configuration for DarwinTunes (different selection, recombination, no pre-recorded samples etc). When we started the experiment "proper" we had to start it all again from scratch, so that the public and student populations had the same starting material. The test population was too good to throw away, so we moved it here, without enough explanation, sorry for that!

So, for the record, this population started some time in November 2009, and the first few thousand ratings were 95% done by me (Bob).

Ahh, gotcha.

I understand now. Thanks for the prompt response and explanation.

I'll be listening with interest as the public project evolves. Do you expect you'll be providing a summary of selection trends, from a musical point of view? (e.g., higher-pitched loops have better survival rates, such-and-such BPM went extinct, or what have you.)

Hi, yes, we're going to do

Hi, yes, we're going to do the best we can to identify which musical elements were selected for and against. I say "best we can" because we need probably can't listen to all 30k loops!
